Jerome Simmons was a photographer from Chicago, Illinois. He began his career at Johnson Publishing Company, where he photographed for Ebony and Jet magazines and toured with the Ebony Fashion Fair. Simmons captured images of numerous prominent figures in music, including Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight & the Pips, and worked closely with Soul Train creator Don Cornelius and the Citizen Newspaper Group.
In addition to his photography, Simmons was active in music journalism and event organizing. He served as the Midwest Editor of Black Radio Exclusive (BRE) and founded the Midwest Radio and Music Conference. Through his Griot Awards, he recognized achievements in Black music and media. Simmons also operated a photography studio in Chicago and was honored by the DuSable Black History Museum for his contributions to cultural preservation.
He passed away in May 2024.
