Triple Darkness was an underground hip-hop group from Chicago, Illinois, active during the late 1990s and 2000s. The group consisted of DaWreck, Trick, and Hanius, and released several independent projects that circulated through Chicago’s local rap scene as well as through online collector communities.[1]
The group’s first release was the underground cassette Paper Chase (The Green Tape), which was one of the most popular Chicago underground tapes of the 1990s, and the track “Chop Up That Paper” was later named among the top 40 Chicago songs of all time by Complex[2]; in 1997 they followed with the single “Cold Blooded,” produced by The Legendary Traxster.[3]
Their recorded output, including EPs, albums, and mixtapes, remains documented through major discography databases and streaming platforms.[4][5]
Triple Darkness holds a place in Chicago hip-hop history in part through the work of group member DaWreck, who has remained active as a contributor to the preservation and documentation of the city’s rap legacy. In a 2019 Chicago Reader article, DaWreck is noted for releasing a mini-documentary on YouTube about E.C. Illa’s 1994 EP Live From the Ill, contextualizing the EP’s creation and its role in the development of Chicago hip-hop.[6] The Reader describes the documentary as “a must-watch for any hip-hop head” and positions it as part of a broader effort to surface overlooked Chicago rap history, an area where small labels, collectors, and artists have played a crucial role.
