Shawntae Harris-Dupart (born April 14, 1974), known professionally as Da Brat, is an emcee from Chicago, Illinois. She began her career in 1992 and signed with Jermaine Dupri's So So Def Recordings in 1994, releasing her debut album Funkdafied. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA, making Da Brat the first female solo rapper to achieve this milestone. Its lead single, "Funkdafied," reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot Rap Songs chart.
Da Brat released several albums, including Anuthatantrum (1996), which featured the single "Ghetto Love" with T-Boz, Unrestricted (2000), and Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz (2003). Her third album marked a shift toward a more mainstream, sexually explicit image. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with various artists such as Lil' Kim, Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott, Destiny's Child, and Dem Franchize Boyz. Notable guest appearances include the 1997 remix of "Not Tonight" alongside Lil' Kim and others, and the 2005 single "I Think They Like Me" by Dem Franchize Boyz.
Da Brat has also appeared in films like Kazaam (1996) and Glitter (2001), and participated in reality TV series including VH1's The Surreal Life and Celebrity Fit Club. Since 2015, she has been a co-host on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show and a mentor on the reality competition The Rap Game. In 2017, she joined the cast of Growing Up Hip-Hop: Atlanta. Da Brat has received two Grammy Award nominations over the course of her career. [1][2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
